The blue-grey cobblestones of Old San Juan are ballast. Adoquines, cast from iron furnace slag in nineteenth-century Spanish foundries, arrived in ship holds as counterweight and were laid down as pavement once the cargo was unloaded. They oxidize toward cobalt in rain.

Why this matters now is a question of scale. The district measures under one square mile, so the distance between a 300-year-old convent, a fourth-generation panadería and a rum bar pouring Don Q is measured in metres, not miles.
